Who we are
Who we are

ECCO is a global family of shoemakers

True passion is essential to making great shoes. From drawing the first sketches to presenting our finished shoes in ECCO stores around the world, we apply the utmost attention to detail and quality.

Unique to our industry, we make leather at our own tanneries and produce shoes at our own factories. Our global family of employees, representing over 50 nationalities, is the life force behind our products. Design, development, production, and retail – we take responsibility all the way.

Throughout our history, our philosophy has been to make shoes that are shaped to fit the foot, not the other way around. This is who we are.

Shoes made for human beings

ECCO builds its success on uncompromising quality, innovative technology and our design philosophy “the shoe must follow the foot”. We believe this is only natural - why shouldn’t your shoes follow your feet?

Premium ECCO Leather

Leather is a fundamental component of most ECCO shoes. Since 1985, ECCO Leather has grown to become one of the world’s largest producers of quality leather. Only top quality leathers are produced at ECCO’s tanneries, which supply our shoe factories and other demanding high-end brands.

Leather goods & accessories

ECCO’s Scandinavian design capabilities and leather expertise is brought to life by ECCO Accessories in a wide selection of luxurious handbags and small leather goods as well as essential shoe care products. Since 1995, ECCO has carefully chosen and produced accessories to match our global shoe collection.

From Hide to High Street

At ECCO, we believe in controlling our processes and checking our products down to the smallest detail. This is possible because ECCO – as probably the world’s only major shoe company – owns and controls the whole shoemaking process from hide to High Street. From design and leather craftsmanship to production, quality testing and sales, ECCO controls every step of the shoemaking process, ensuring the high ECCO quality.

Design

It all begins at ECCO’s Design Centre. ECCO’s designers search for inspiration from many sources. The pure nature surrounding our Design Centre is always our starting point.

Fashion, art, architecture, cars – inspiration can come from anywhere. But our consistent dedication to Scandinavian design and the ECCO heritage is unique to all our shoes.

No shoe ever leaves the Design Centre without first being checked for lightness, softness, flexibility, comfort and fit.

Product Development

We constantly challenge the boundaries of comfort, innovative shoe design and the market’s best quality. This requires uncompromising product development in which every detail from design to production is carefully planned and monitored.

Gifted shoemakers and engineers are responsible for converting the innovative ideas of ECCO designers into fully specified prototypes.

Our product development units in Denmark and Portugal supply ECCO tanneries and shoe factories with detailed instructions on how to produce materials and shoes that live up to our high standards and our consumers’ expectations.

Making Leather

ECCO’s most important raw material is first-class leather. This is why ECCO owns and operates state-of-the-art tanneries in Europe and in Asia, as well as our own leather development and design centre.

ECCO also provides quality leather to other high-end and luxury brands in the leather goods industry. The ECCO Leather Group is one of the world’s largest manufacturers of quality leather – approximately half of our leather production is sold to other companies and brands.

Making Shoes

Quality, comfort and style are the hallmarks of ECCO shoes. Our production technology is unique to the business. After having been stitched by thousands of meticulous craftsmen in our factories, the shoe upper is placed in a mould, where the sole is fused directly to the upper under heat and high pressure.

Distribution

With over 20,000,000 pairs of shoes sold each year, effective distribution to ECCO’s markets is vital. We produce shoes in both Europe and Asia - close to most of our main markets.

Our integrated supply chain ensures that our distribution partners and our own stores receive deliveries where and when needed. Our global distribution system also supports the increasing demands for rapid delivery to online shoppers.

Every day thousands of consumers enter one of 1,100 ECCO stores or 14,000 other selling points across the world. Our success depends on their experience in the stores. You never get a second chance to make a first impression.

Finding the right shoe with the right fit is crucial. Trained staff in the stores always aim to pick the perfect pair of shoes for you.

Sales and distribution close to our customers

ECCO wishes to be as close to our customers as possible. Therefore, we manage our sales activities close to the shoe stores in three regions – North America, Asia Pacific and Europe, Middle East & Africa. These three regions cover some 90 markets in which ECCO products are for sale – just about half of the world’s countries. We distribute via wholesale, retail, e-commerce and m-commerce.

It is our aim to ensure that consumers get an attractive shopping experience at every touch point they have with the ECCO brand.

Retail
Retail

More than 14,000 selling points all over the world

We sell our shoes and accessories from 1,100 ECCO stores and at 14,000 other selling points in some 90 countries. That is a lot of places for your feet to feel what real comfort is.

Every year ECCO typically opens 120-150 new branded stores, a proportion of which are relocations or refitting of existing stores.

Factories
Factories

Shoe workers with passion

ECCO’s factories are managed based on the lean manufacturing philosophy, in which the employees are highly involved in working with continuous improvements. The result of this work is tangible and shared across ECCO's five shoe factories to constantly increase efficiency and stay competitive.

Factories

ECCO China

ECCO’s Xiamen shoe factory was established in 2005. The factory is located in Tong’an some 35 km from the beautiful island of Xiamen in southern China. A coastal site was chosen to support easy access to export facilities and because the city, with its 2.4 million inhabitants, could provide a large local labour pool to ensure a long-term and stable workforce.

Factories

ECCO Indonesia

Our shoe factory in Indonesia was established as ECCO’s first Asian-based factory in 1990. The factory is located in Sidoarjo (near Surabaya) on the eastern side of Java Island. This location was chosen due to the good local supply of high quality hides and the many craftsmen in the area due to an already existing shoe industry.

Factories

ECCO Portugal

In 1984, ECCO established a production subsidiary in João de Vêr, Portugal. This site was ECCO’s first owned and operated shoe factory outside Denmark. Portugal was at the time already a major player in the European footwear industry, which made it easy to recruit specialist staff.  Large-scale production ceased in 2009 due to tough Asian competition. However, in 2012 ECCO restarted production in Portugal as production flexibility and closeness to European markets became increasingly important. Many previous employees returned to put their shoemaking skills into practice once again.

Factories

ECCO Slovakia

Our shoe factory in Slovakia was established in 1998. The factory is located in Martin in the northern part of Slovakia. Martin is one of Slovakia’s larger cities, and the location was chosen as the site for the new ECCO facility due to good infrastructure and a well-educated workforce.

Factories

ECCO Thailand

Our shoe factory in Ayutthaya, just north of Bangkok, was established in 1993. Thailand was chosen due to its significant support industries and the high level of shoe industry craftsmanship.

In October 2011, severe flooding hit Thailand and ECCO’s factory. One third of ECCO’s total production for the Spring/Summer 2012 season had to be reallocated from Thailand to other ECCO production units and external suppliers.

Production in Ayutthaya was restarted already in March 2012, and by May 2012, ECCO was producing more than half its normal output in Thailand. In a remarkable effort throughout 2012, ECCO production staff from Ayutthaya travelled four hours by bus every day to operate a temporary factory.

During 2013, the factory was completely modernised and refurbished to support a high-quality, efficient production set-up.

We're comfortable in our own skin

ECCO Leather owns and operates tanneries in China, the Netherlands, Indonesia, and Thailand. These state-of-the-art tanneries offer secure production capabilities and scale to suit growing customer demand as well as seamless communication with ECCO’s shoe factories.

More than 200 hands touch every piece of leather before it leaves the building – surely the ultimate symbol of craftsmanship and quality control.

In ECCO’s beamhouse, rawhides are washed several times in large drums to remove dirt, hair and natural fat. The hides are also processed in various machines that cut off the excess fat and make the hides slim.

In the tannery, the hides undergo a tanning process to make them soft, flexible and stable in water. The hides are then referred to as wet blue because of the blue-green shade which they acquire when they are treated. The wet blue is tanned in drums with colour and is dried, stretched, sprayed and pressed to get the right look, feel and quality of the finished leather.

ECCO China

ECCO Leather opened its fourth tannery in September 2008 in Xiamen, China.
ECCO Tannery Xiamen is one of the most modern tanneries ever built. Although new in the Chinese tanning business, ECCO Tannery Xiamen was awarded Tannery of the Year 2009.

Tanneries

ECCO Holland

The tannery in the Netherlands houses a high-tech beamhouse and tannery. This is also the head office for all ECCO's tanneries. It is located in Dongen, approximately 100 km south of Amsterdam.

To further improve service to the premium leather goods industry, ECCO Leather in the autumn of 2013 inaugurated a new finishing plant in the Netherlands. This facility opened new market opportunities in luxury leathers.

Tanneries

ECCO Indonesia

ECCO’s tannery in Indonesia houses a beamhouse and a tannery. Both were built together with ECCO's shoefactory in 1991. The tannery is located in Sidoarjo near Surabaya on the eastern side of Java Island.
The tannery was completely rebuilt in 2012. New machinery and lay-out are designed to create a more efficient production flow and improved working environment.

Tanneries

ECCO Thailand

The tannery was built in 1999 next to the shoe factory in Ayutthaya 80 km north of Bangkok. The tannery processes leather from wet blue, which is primarily imported from ECCO Leather’s beamhouses in Indonesia and the Netherlands.
