In 2006, inspired by the barefoot runners of Africa, ECCO started The BIOM Project. A project that would see the dawn of an entirely new shoe technology.

How was it made?

BIOM is based on scans of 2500 athletes’ feet, findings from biomechanics researchers and thorough tests by world elite and world champion triathletes.

BIOM shoes are characterized by reduced seam construction, a glove-like fit and enhanced stability on uneven terrain.

What is Biom®?

BIOM stands for “biomechanical optimization.” The technology enhances the foot´s ability to move more naturally – like barefoot running. 

The keys to BIOM technology

  • Anatomically correct flex grooves following the biomechanics of your foot enhances natural movement by providing better push and maximum forward movement. 
  • Low-to-the-ground construction allows the foot to react naturally to the ground for improved stability, creating ground feedback and encouraging leg muscles to strengthen with every step. 
  • By injecting a resilient shock absorbent PU material directly into the shoe mold we bond the sole to the upper creating an ergonomically sole that retains shock absorbency and provides a light, cushioned step.
  • We have designed an anatomical last that matches the natural curves of the foot. This, combined with so and durable ECCO leathers, or bonded textile uppers results in a glove like fit.

Anatomically shaped upper offers glove-like fit and necessary support for a natural feel

Inlay sole

An anatomically moulded inlay sole provides additional cushioning and enhances comfort

Strobel

A soft strobel insert underneath the inlay sole provides additional cushioning as it enhances the shock absorption and softness of the shoe

Shank

A special BIOM shank, inserted into the midsole, enhances optimal stability and support without limiting natural torsion

Midsole

A direct-injected PU midsole bonds the upper and outsole together, and provides long-lasting cushioning and an accurate anatomical support

Outsole

A flexible TPU outsole enhances optimal grip and durability
